A new bed, whether it be for yourself, your children, or guests, can add dramatic, beautiful and comfortable elements you can use as a starting point for the décor of your bedroom. When choosing a new bed, one must take into account many different options. From sizing, styles, and the components necessary to safely ensure the comfort of the sleeper, the process of choosing a new bed can be daunting if you don't have the proper information.
When you are selecting the size of a new bed it is important to take into account who you will be sharing your bed with and the particular range/level of nighttime motion that your partner has. If you and your partner are tall and both move frequently throughout the night then you may want to consider a larger bed.
The sizing of the bed is based upon the size of the mattress that will fit into it. Adding four inches to the length of your bed for the headboard and another four inches for the footboard is a safe way to gauge a more accurate measurement of how your new bed will fit into your bedroom. Also, you may want to consider leaving space for18 – 24 inches on either side of the bed for ease of movement. Twin, Twin XL, and Full or Double sized mattresses are primarily intended to sleep one person and have the mattress measurements of 39”W x 75”L (Twin), 39”W x 80”L (Twin XL), and 54”W x 75”L (Full or Double). Queen, King, and California King sizes are designed to sleep more than one and measure 60”W x 80”L (Queen), 76”W x 80”L (Standard or Eastern King), and 72”W x 84”L (California King).
Your bed can be a continuation of your personality. Whether you are old-fashioned, ultra contemporary, versatile, carefree or just downright practical, your bed can reflect these traits.
If you have a small living space, or you need to create sleeping space for the unexpected guest, a Sofa Bed, Futon, Murphy, or Daybed may be a comfortable way to quickly sleep guests, while still being able utilize your living space on a day-to-day basis. For your kids' room, Bunk,& storage beds beds are all viable space saving options will allow for easier sleepovers, or adding the additional room needed for a study desk or art space.
For a more powerful and permanent slumbering statement, the larger Sleigh, Panel, Poster, or Platform beds will be sure to make a dramatic impact upon your bedroom, while letting you choose the exact style and feel that suits you the best. These larger beds come in a pack of easy-to-assemble components that usually consist of a headboard, footboard, frame, slats (support mattress and box spring horizontally) and rails (either bolt or hook on to connect headboard to footboard). It is important to know what components come with your new bed and which are needed to safely support you and your mattress. If the frame, rails, and/or slats are not provided with bed upon purchase, it is advisable to use the variety of combinations of frame, rail and slat that are recommended by the manufacturer.
When considering the construction of a new bed frame, it is wise to take into consideration the materials used to build it. Press board frames are no substitute for solid hardwoods and may over time lead to warping and cause the need for replacement. Metal beds and frames are sturdy and strong but over time may loosen at the joints, causing the bed to creak and make a considerable amount of noise. Wood or metal, it is important for your safety to regularly check your frame for warping, cracks or splits in the wood, or loosening joints.
